Namaskaram to All,

Thursday morning would be packed with lot of interesting activities in Perumal Kovil. The events would start with Aal mel pallakku followed by mattayadi mahotsavam and culminates with theerthavari.

Let me start with Aal mel pallaku and take your thro’ rest of the events in the morning. Perarulalan would leave, alone, from the kovil at around 04:30 on Aal mel pallakku. This type of pallakku is unique as Perarulalan would be carried by 4 dolls. When leaving the kovil, Devathirajan would wear nine silk duppatta / porvai instead of maalais. When Devathirajan reaches gangai kondaan mantapam, he would remove the porvai one by one, this event is know as porvai kalaithal. After this, Perarulalan, would head back to kovil with his regular maalai.

All this while our ubhaya naachimaar would be in kannadi arai waiting for their (our) Lord’s arrival. As Devathirajan passes the dwajasthambham, the doors would be shut. For the next hour pranaya kalagam utsavam (house hold quarrel between Perarulalan & Naachimaar) would take place to our pleasure. During the whole episode our naachimaar would be standing in the kannadi arai mandapam and Perarulalan would be standing below.

The verbal duel between our parents (!) would be an interesting fare. This event would be similar to the one during panguni uthiram in Srirangam but with less fun fare and without Arayar swamigals. After all kanchipuram is Thayaga bhoomi and not Bhoga bhoomi.

Finally once our Naachimaar are convinced of our Perarulalan’s affection, they would descend from the mandapam to join our Perumal. Then all of them would proceed to 100 kaal mandapam.

Pranaarthihara varadan, nithya thirumanjana moorthy, would come down from thirumalai to join Perumal & Naachimaar in 100 kaal mandapam. Thiruaradhanam would be performed. During thiruaradhanam Naachimaar would not be on either side of Perarulalan but both of them would be on his right side, this sevai is unique to this day of Brahmotsavam.

After this mariyadai would be done for an archakar. This would be followed by puniyavajanam & avahanam, invoking of all holy rivers to decend, for Anantha saras (pushkarani). The archakar, who had mariyadai, would have dip in pushkarani with the nithya thirumanjana moorthy. This is unique as in all the other temples theerthavari is done with chakrathalwar.

After this Pranaarthihara varadan would head back to thirumalai, while Perarulan along with Naachimaar would go back to kannadi arai.

In my next mail I shall touch upon Punniya kodi vimana purappadu.

Namaskaram,

Wednesday evening our Perarulalan would come galloping on Kudirai vahanam to bless us.

Perarulalan would be dressed as a warrior. His beauty in general and his graceful eyes would remove all the evil thoughts from our minds.

Devathirajan would adore a white thallapa, this is different to the sikkuthadai that he wore during thirurher.

Vedu pari utsavam would be enacted. This event would take place in Thirukachi nambi sannidhi. Thirumangai alwar would do three pradhakshanam after which he would receive pariyattam mariyadhai and maalai.

Varadar’s purappadu during Brahmotsavam, are not confined to maada veedhis, as in other divya desams, but would cover most part of kanchipuram, may be indicate that he is the lord of the entire kshethram. Varadar in almost all his vahanams would go upto Gangai kondan mandapam, where thiru aradhanam is performed, before heading back to kovil.

Ghosti is an integral part of any purappadu. The ghosti in kanchipuram is very famous, both for quantity and quality. Every member of the ghosti is a stalwart by themself and would all assemble to enjoy the beauty of our Lord. The Divya prabhandam reciters (Iyal ghosti) would proceed before our Devathirajan. They would move forward slowly reciting the Divya prabhandam in their charismatic melliflous tones. Immediatly behind Devathirajan would come the veda reciters called the Vedaparayana ghosti, who would recite the vedas in the traditional orthodox style. Every purappadu would last for atleast 4~5 hours and all the time this ghosti would recite and walk along with Devathirajan with all dedication. Mind you that they would be walking bare foot and would not take a break. All of them are not paid for the service, the only reason for their dedication is that this service would please our Devathirajan.

In my next mail I shall cover all the events of actioned packed ninth day morning.

Namaskaram to All,

There is no purappadu tomorrow as our Varadar would have Thirupatham jadi thirumanjanam / thotti thirumanjanam.

This is a very sampradayic function.

All the holy rivers are invoked in a silver gangalam and starting with Varadar followed by Sridevi and Bhudevi are carried and lowered in the gangalam so that thier thiruvadi are under water.

This tradition / event is very unique and is not part of Brahmotsavam in other temples, the only exception being Ahobilam (lower), who incidentally happens to be Varadar.

While their is no fun fare like the other days, it is adequatly compensated by the following rare sights.

  • Devathirajan would sport urdhava pundaram, genarally on all the other days he would have only a tilakam.
  • Perarulalan would be wearing pancha kachham.
  • Could get a glimpse of udhaya naachimar.

While you can download the pictures shared by me and my friends, I have a humble request. Please dont distort or use these pictures for any commercial purpose. We are all sharing the pictures out of love for our Divya dhampathis with no commercial intrest. Dont spoil / discourage our effort.

THE SEVEN C’s OF SUCCESS..

THE SEVEN C’s OF SUCCESS by Brian Tracy

Clarity: Eighty percent of success comes from being clear on who you are, what you believe in and what you want.

Competence: You can’t climb to the next rung on the ladder until you are excellent at what you do now.

Constraints: Eighty percent of all obstacles to success come from within. Find out what is constraining in you or your company and deal with it.

Concentration: The ability to focus on one thing single-mindedly and see it through until it’s done takes more character than anything else.

Creativity: Flood your life with ideas from many sources. Creativity needs to be exercised like a muscle; if you don’t use it you’ll lose it.

Courage: Most in demand and least in supply, courage is the willingness to do the things you know are right.

Continuous learning: Read, at the very least, one book a week on business to keep you miles ahead of the competition. And just as you eat and bathe, organize your time so you spend 30 minutes a day exploring email, sending messages, going through websites, because like exercise, it’s the only way you can keep on top of technology. If you get away from it, you’ll lose your edge…

Namaskaram,

Tusday morning it is the ther that gets a change to bring Varadar close to us.

As per shastharam, Perumal should climb on to ther thattu within the same muhurtham of him leaving the temple. Generally in all the temples the ther is parked / stationed very close to the temple so this condition / clause is not a concern. However, in Perumal kovil the ther is stationed about 3 kilometers from the temple.

Thepperumal would only stop at hanumar kovil once he leaves the kovil. Our sripadam thangies would literally run and it would be wonderful sight to watch.

Our Perumal would adore red sikkuthadai and would add beauty to Robert clive khandi necklace). For the benefit of new readers let me give a quick look in history about this khandi.

Around AD 1751 Robert Clive (East india company) was going round in kanchipuram when he came across Perarulalan on his Garuda vahanam. He commanded the purappadu to stop. At that time one archakar informed the durai that it is hot and Varadar should be heading back to kovil. Durai sarcastically wanted to know what effect heat would have on an idol. The archakar was furious and told the englishman that Perarulalan is not an idol but a living god. As expected clive wanted proof. Immediatly, archakar got a fresh vastharam and wiped the back of Perarulalan and handed the vastharam to clive, who was astonished to see a wet towel. Immediatly he offered a necklace to our Lord.

Another version. During the second carnatic war the british troops were stationed in kanchipuram, preparing to attack Arcot. One day Robert clive was seriously ill and doctors have given up hope. One asthiga mentioned about our Perarulalan. Clive wanted to test the power of our lord and prayed to our Lord in the night. To everybody’s surprise clive had completly recovered in the morning. Later he went on to capture Arcot and gifted arcot rani’s necklace to our Lord.

Irrespective of the version, the fact remains that Robert clive gifted a necklace to our Perarulalan. The necklace is know after its donor till date.

Devathirajan would bless this thiruabharnam on important occasions and on couple of purappadu‘s during Brahmotsavam. Even this year our Devathirajan has been graceful enought in accepting a new navarathna oddiyanam, have attached the picture.

Thiruvezukoorrirukkai of Thirumangai alvar would be recited by ghosti today. The construction of verse in this unique composition consist of 47 lines and follows the pattern of a temple car (Ratha bhandam) of seven decks.

Namaskaram,

Monday evening our Varadar would bless us all when he rides on his favorite vahanam.

Perarulalan is closely associated with Yanai. Varadar resides on top of Hasthigiri. Hasthi, in sanskrit, means elephant. Some say that Iravadam, elephant of Indra that appeared during churning of the milky ocean and was given to Indra to ride on, took the form of a hilllock so that Varadar could reside and bless us all. It is also Varadar who had rushed to save Gajendaran from the claws of the crocodile. It was elephant, gajendaran, who had worshipped Varadr in treta yugam.

The yanai in the vahanam in our kovil is unique!! In all other temples you would see the elephant either sitting or standing but in all the case you could see the legs of the elephant but in our kovil the legs of the yanai is not visible. The reason being, the legs of the yanai are under water at the time of gajendra moksham. Would appreciate if someone could share the picture.

Devathirajan’s beauty in this vahanam is unparalleled. Swamy desikan in his Thiruchinamaalai had praised the beauty of this vahana purappadu by singing "Aanai pari mel Azhagar Vanthar".

While on the subject of gajendran, Sri Parasara bhatter in his commentary on Sri Vishnu Sahasranamam, Bhagavatguna Darpanam, faithfully reflects the greatmess and grandeur of Lord’s traits. He had identified 34 names referring to Gajendra moksham.

Nacchiyar thirumozhi would be recited during the purappadu.

Namaskaram,

Monday morning when Varadar comes out as krishnar in Thanga chapparam I would be present (represented) during the purappadu.

When Varadar blessed us all as Rama (Hanumantha vahanam) could Krishnar be behind, in this purappadu Varadar would be in venugopalan thirukolam.

Our Varadar is granter of all boons and this sometimes works to his disadvantage!! When we know our lord is the king of all we could, at sometimes, feel let down as we would not be sure if someone at that level would listen to our request and grant our wishes. With that iota of doubth we would start to go around elsewhere with our wishes, this would make Varadar sad as he likes our company and would miss us. How best to attract us towards him, so today he would exhibit one of his other character – sowlabyam, and assure us he is one among us.

In some temples, during brahmotsavam, the Lord would come as kutty krishnar, crawling with butter in his hands. Varadar on the hand comes out as venugopalan. I guess if Varadar would have come as kutty krishnar we would have no doubt enjoyed the beauty but would not have requested anything, thinking he is a small baby. So Varadar has combined both the attributes of sowlabyam and granter of wishes in one thirukolam.

In the chapparam a cow and calf would accompany Varadar and nacchimaar. This calf would not be there during the third day purappadu during dhavana utsavam when Varadar would be in Venugopalan thirukolam. Since I had the baghyam of that sevai during dhavana utsavam, during this purappadu the calf is representing me.

During the purappadu Thirupallandu and Thiruchanda viruththam would be recited.

Namaskaram,

Sunday evening would be a true out of the world experience in perumal kovil.

Today our Lord would ride on Yali vahanam. Yali, is a combination of animal & reptile. It has body and head of a lion with a trunk of an elephant and serpent as its tail. This creature was supposed to be as ferocious as a lion, as strong as an elephant and would send shiver down the spine with the presence of the serpent. Good for all of us that this creature is not visible and exists within the realm of imagination.

As per shilpa shastra having this creature in the door way would ward off evil thoughts. That is the main reason you would see them sculpted mainly on the door ways. This creature is also one of the favorite for sculptures as they can let their imagination go wild while carving.

Devathirajan is the right person to ride this vahanam as he is has also appeared in such unique combination of man & lion to protect his dear devotee.

Periyalwar’s thirumozhi would be recited in today’s purappadu. The pasurams recited would be those pertaining to Divya desams in jungles or mountains as we would have more chances of sighting yali in these regions. The divya desams covered would be Badri (958 ~ 986), Naimisaranyam (998 ~ 1007), Sengavelkundrum (1008 ~ 1017), Thiruvenkatam (1018 ~ 1057) and Tirumaliruncholai (1818~1827).

Namaskaram,

Sunday morning would be a visual treat in Perumal kovil. Our Varadar would adore all the thiruabarhnam of our thayar.

As always lets touch upon the origin of this thirukolam. Once sage Durvasa offered the garland of Mahalakshmi to Indira, who was riding on his elephant. Indira accepted the garland and placed it in his elephant. The elephant, irritated by the smell of the garland, threw it to the ground. This action enraged the sage, who is legendary for his temper, as the garland was a prasadam from Mahavishnu’s consort. Durvasa cursed Indra and all devas to be devoid of all strength, energy and fortune.

In the battle that followed devas were routedby asuras and devas as always sought the help of mahavishnu. Mahavishnu advised the devas that they should churn the milky white ocean, with the help of asuras, and from which the nectar of immortality would be obtained.

Devas and asuras started churning with mount Mandara as the dasher and snake Vasuki as the rope. As the churning continued Kautubha ratnam, Kamadhenu, Kalpavriksham, Sharangam and Lakshmi her self emerged followed by various other celestial items. Finally the nectar of immortality, amirtham, emerged and immediately devas and asuras started fighting for it. Mahavishnu took the form of a lady (Mohini), who was the most beautiful lady that the assembled gods, devas and asuras have ever seen. Mohini distributed the amirtham to devas, who vanquished the asuras.

There are small variations in this story between the puranas, but one thing that is common among all the puranas is the beauty of the lord when he took the form of Mohini.

Likewise the beauty of Varadar would get exponentially increased in this thirukolam. There could be many reasons for Varadar’s incomparable beauty in this thirukolam, but I would attribute the beauty to Varadar’s most compassionate consort, Perundevi thayar. Varadar has borrowed all the thiruabhardanam of Thayar, he has even let go his unique kadukan (ear ring) and adored Thayar’s ear ring. Varadar, to complete his looks, even swap both his weapons (Shunkam & Chakram) for a pair of lotus, that too similar to the ones held by Perundevi thayar.

We all (some of us) might have committed many sins, so much so we get a place in hiranyakashipu’s ghosti. the comforting factor in this thirukolam is we would not be punished as Perumal dosent have his discus and also all the thiruabharnams of Thayar would make him as compasspnate as our jagan matha (Perundevi Thayar). This is the reason I feel very safe in this thirukolam.

I would request if anyone can capture the picture of our lord holding the kamalam, instead of shunkam & chakram.

During the purappadu, the ghosti would recite Thirupallandu, Thiruppavai in addition to Periya thiruvanthathi & thiruviruththam.

In my next mail, we would touch up on the purappadu that exist only in our imagination.

Namaskaram to All,

It gives me immence pleasure to scribble couple of words about the most artistic vahanam of the Brahmotsavam.

Today morning after a short (long) gap we would have dharshan of our ubhaya naachimaar’s when Devathirajan in Paramapatha nathan thirukolam rides on sesha vahanam.

This purappadu is the trailer of what we could expect when we reach srivaikuntam, when we leave our current body. This is the way our Perarulalan is waiting for us.

To truly appreciate today’s vahanam and the significance to the present yugam (kali) we need to have a quick preview into the sthala puranam. I know many of you may be aware but for the benefit of new readers, kindly bear with me, I would try and keep it short.

Varadar came down to kanchipuram, also know as Sathya Vratha Kshethram, during Kritha yugam (the first of the 4 yugam) to bless Brahma, when he was performing a aswametha yagam to have dharshan of Brahmam. On Brahma’s request, Varadarajar continued to stay on top of Hasthi giri and continued to bless the devotees in that yugam. In Treta yugam, Varadar was worshiped by Gajenderan, yes the same elephant who was rescued from the clutches of the crocodile. Brahaspati, deva’s guru worshiped Varadar in Dwapara yugam. Currently in Kali yugam our Varadar is worshipped by Anathan. The present day archakas are carrying out the service on behalf of Adisheshan, the king of snakes.

When our Perarulalan rides on sesha vahanam, he is honouring his archakas of the current yugam.

Devathirajan would be decked with Thanga thiru abishekam and would also adore robert clive khandi.

During today’s purappadu Naanmugan thiruvandhadhi would be recited, that beyond doubt establishes our Lord’s supremacy.

24/05/2013 – Friday – Day3 Morning – Garuda Sevai – Album Part1
