Brahmotsavam – Thotti Thirumanjanam @ Kanchipuram Varadarajar Kovil May 20, 2014

Namaskaram to All,

There was no purappadu on Monday (19th May) in the morning and our Varadar took a well-deserved break up until noon. At around quarter past noon he had thirumanjanam. While this thirumanjanam was special there was nothing special about this thirumanjanam.

After the thirumanjanam, while Perarulalan and naachimaar were getting dressed, out of our views, Sanctification ceremony started for a silver gangalam (large vessel), after adding saffron and other aromatic ingredients were added, this marked the start of Thirupatham jadi thirumanjanam / thotti thirumanjanam.

By this time Varadar and his consort are all regally dressed. Varadar was carried and gently lowered in the gangalam, until his thiruvadi was just below the water. After that he is held up in the air so that all the assembled devotees could get to see the real king. This was followed by Sridevi and Bhudevi who were also carried by the archakas and are lowered in the gangalam followed by raising them for full view. Finally sadagopam also got the turn.

This tradition / event is very unique for Varadar and is not part of Brahmotsavam in other temples, the only exception being Ahobilam (lower), who incidentally happens to be Varadar (Prahalada).

While there is no fun fare like the other days, it is adequately compensated by the following rare sights.

  • Devathirajan would sport urdhava pundaram, generally on all the other days he would have only a tilakam.
  • Perarulalan would be wearing pancha kachham.
  • Varadar would wear replace his trademark large diamond kadukkan for Sanghu charkaram kadukkan.
  • Could get a glimpse of ubhaya naachimar thiruvadi, which is out of bounds on other days.

By following the Brahmotsavam not only Varadar treats us to our fill with his grace and beauty but Perundevi thaayar and ubhaya nachimaar give us the glimpse of their thiruvadi on Kadai velli and on the eighth day respectively.

While you can download the pictures shared by me and my friends, I have a humble request. Please don’t distort or use these pictures for any commercial purpose. We are all sharing the pictures out of love for our Divya dhampathis with no commercial interest. Don’t spoil / discourage our effort.

In my next mail, I shall share details of how our Kalian chases our Perarulalan, who rides on Kudirai vahanam.
